One woman’s journey in Romania

An interview with Kathy Pope reveals a quarter-century of dedication, compassion, and a deeply-felt calling to serve the people of Romania.

For Kathy Pope, Romania is a land of beautiful contrasts—from its diverse landscape of vast plains and snow-capped mountains to the stark reality of life for its most vulnerable communities. For 26 years, Kathy has been a volunteer, working with the Hope in Action part of the Romanian charity FAST.

What began with a strong sense of divine calling led Kathy to work with groups of volunteers, run summer schools, and train people in child development and play therapy. Her work has evolved over the years, and for the past few years, she has focused on supporting Roma families in three villages near Brasov. "The children who come to the mission houses are happy, enthusiastic and love to be there!"

Life for these communities is difficult. Faced with poverty, discrimination, and marginalisation, many families lack basic amenities like electricity and running water. Despite these hardships, Kathy describes the children who come to the mission houses as happy and enthusiastic. These houses provide a safe space with daily meals, games, art, and Bible stories, helping to supplement the children’s education and overall development.

Kathy’s work is a testament to the power of lasting change. She has witnessed incredible progress, from the closing of large orphanages and greater acceptance of those with additional needs, to the building of simple, basic homes for families. She notes that the charity’s efforts have improved living standards and provided valuable training, creating more opportunities for employment.

But one of her greatest joys come from her family’s involvement. Her daughter Becki has been with her for nearly as long as she’s been working there, and now her grandchildren, Ezra and Belle, are also joining in the mission. “The hospitality shown by people is very humbling and has inspired me,” Kathy reflects, highlighting the deep connections she’s formed.

A Vision for the Future

Kathy’s vision is simple yet profound: to share the love of God in practical ways. While she has retired from her full-time career, she remains dedicated to her work, raising funds through plant sales and talks to promote the charity’s mission. When asked how others can help, her answer is clear: the most important thing is prayer. As she says, the need for both volunteers and financial support has grown, but the unwavering spirit of hope continues to shine.
