Building Community Brick by Brick
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5: 11)
Our weekly Lego club, Brick Buddies launched at the beginning of June as an after school club, and has proved to be so much fun that we are continuing through the summer holidays! Our goal is not just to provide an engaging, creative outlet for children and families, but to build friendships and connections with the wider community.
Each week, we enjoy refreshments together and watch a short Bible story animation before enjoying an optional building challenge based on the story. So far, we’ve built the tower of Babel, Noah’s Ark, the walls of Jericho, the Ark of the Covenant, the well where Jesus met a Samaritan woman, the home where a man was lowered through the roof to Jesus, and the pyramids of Egypt! We’ve seen some incredible creativity and design, including a working winch to lower the man through the roof, a camel atop the tower of Babel, and some interesting characters on Noah’s Ark! We’ve also enjoyed building countless pony paddocks, gardens, moonscapes, spaceships, supercars and seascapes!
Brick Buddies is a wonderful opportunity to build friendships and a sense of community within the church setting, especially for those who may not be involved with church regularly. It’s a great way to encourage families to engage with one another through shared activity where parents and children express their creativity together. It also helps to foster intergenerational relationships. Lego’s timeless attraction appeals to builders and helpers of all ages, and it’s lovely to witness shared enthusiasm for Lego across the generations. The group is open to anyone from aged 4 (or younger...we have Duplo) to 104!
Additionally, it’s a great way to connect with local schools and for children from other schools to meet and make friends. To date we’ve had children from four different schools attending.
Finally...there’s just something incredibly exciting about digging through a box of Lego and unearthing all sorts of treasures to add to a build, then coming back the following week to add more to your creation if desired! One young man spent a week thinking about how to enhance his pyramid and came back and built two more the next time!
Our prayer is that God, who is the builder of all things, (Hebrews 3:4) will not only build our community of Lego enthusiasts, but draw them to Himself through fun and friendship, brick by brick.
Brick Buddies runs every week from 3.30pm on Tuesdays at Holy Trinity Church. The event is free and there is no need to book. Come along and have fun!
